BPA has been established with the support of the Queensland Government to achieve two broad objectives:
• To design, fund and implement construction of a biotherapeutic manufacturing facility to be operated in alliance with an experienced international partner
• To support and grow existing local Australian biotherapeutic manufacturing organisations, and to facilitate synergies between complementary providers of clinical development services.
• The new facility with provide a service solution for companies with biological drug candidate who seek to outsource their process development and manufacturing. It will provide cutting-edge technical and economical methods for generating biopharmaceutical compounds expressed in mammalian cells.
The facility will enable early stage research to be converted into robust, production-ready processes, which can be tested at pilot scale before moving into the highly controlled GMP manufacturing environment required for human medicinal products. BPA will not only cater for pre-clinical development projects, but also for clients manufacturing for clinical trials and the marketplace.
Due to be opened in early 2013, the facility upstream suites will cater for mammalian cell culture up to 2000 litres, with the ability to accommodate future expansion. read more ...

Organisation Description
Athlomics’ business is the personalised management of sepsis patients. The incidence of sepsis and septic shock is rising, now affecting younger patients. With a mortality rate of almost 30%, sepsis is the most common non-coronary cause of death in Intensive Care Units. All-cause sepsis affects 750,000 US hospitalisations yearly and more than half of these are estimated to be hospital-acquired. Sepsis affects 5 to 10% of all hospital patients, leading to an increase of about US$5bn in US health care costs annually. The Total annual cost of sepsis to the US healthcare system is ~US$16bn. Globally, there are an estimate 18 million cases of sepsis per year.
Athlomics’ SeptiCyte® molecular technology can be used for:
1. Earlier detection (<3hrs) and more specific diagnosis of sepsis (85 to 95%; p<0.01), and
2. Regular patient monitoring of
• Sepsis patients in Intensive Care Units (ICU) (immune system response to therapy), and
• Immuno-compromoised patients, e.g. chemotherapy, transplant, AIDS, long-term steroid use, young and the elderly (earlier detection and potential prevention)
Athlomics will launch its first early diagnostic product in Australia in Q2 2010 through Mater Pathology, a wholly-owned business unit of Mater Misericodiae Health Services Brisbane Ltd, Australia.
It has two longitudinal trials underway at Australian hospitals where clinical efficacy is being further evaluated in the regular monitoring of two patient groups:
1. Patients diagnosed with sever sepsis (+ve micro) to monitor the patient’s immune response to therapy, and
2. Patients on chemotherapy (compromised immune system) to monitor for the earlier detection of sepsis.
Athlomics has currently fulfilled Australian regulatory requirements as an LDT. In the US, the early diagnostic will likely be deemed and In Vitro Diagnostic Mulitvariate Index Assay (IVDMIA) – either Class II or III risk. read more ...

In the US, the early diagnostic will likely be deemed and In Vitro Diagnostic Mulitvariate Index Assay (IVDMIA) – either Class II or III risk. read more ...
